Recycling at Nields

Since 2018, Nields School has been collecting recycling through the TerraCycle scheme. We started with just pens and soon after started collecting crisp packets.

In Feb 2019 our recycling efforts were in the local paper - Yorkshire Live:

Nields School pupils have been collecting and recycling pens through a scheme called Terracycle. Governor Karen Hill said: “I knew as a school we used a lot of pens, but I’ve been surprised as to the number of pens heading to landfill from just our school! The children have really got behind the scheme, bringing pens from home and recycling in their classrooms too."

The Pupil Council said: “If we can help the environment, then we stop wildlife dying and the school gets money!

“Nields School cares about the environment, so please help, by collecting pens to send to us and not to landfill”. The first box for recycling will be sent after Easter. To contribute, send your used pens to Nields School, marked Pen Recycling, FAO Mrs Hill.

Over the years, we have increased the number of schemes we are signed up to and stopped some that didn’t work so well! We didn’t collect enough beauty products or snacks wrappers, so can no longer accept those. We have also stopped collecting batteries, as we weren’t earning any money from them, and they took up a lot of space in school!

Through TerraCycle, we are currently collecting:

  • Bread bags (LDPE4, Warburton waxed paper and thicker bagel and brioche bags)
  • Pens (any writing implement, including tip ex, but not glue sticks)
  • Toothpaste tubes, plastic toothbrushes, toothbrush packing
  • Home Hygiene / cleaning packaging - flexible plastics only
  • Cheese packaging – including the netting
  • Lavazza Coffee Eco Caps – compostable ones
  • Ferrero Plastic boxes and trays

We recycle ink cartridges from home printers, through The Ink Bin.

Other Recycling

We recycle jewellery, old or foreign coins and currency, used stamps and old mobile phones, cameras and gadgets. Please contact Karen on NieldsPTFA@gmx.com to arrange donation of these items

We have three great recycling collection bins in our school carpark, for any donations to be dropped off. Please place coffee caps in a separate plastic bag before placing in the bins and if you can, use bread bags instead of other types of plastic bags to keep items together. Any questions, please email NieldsPTFA@gmx.com.
